10 Sartorial Sewing Tips
Di Francesca Barbato
Curiosity, advice and secrets on sewing with a Parisian flavor. Francesca reveals some to us...
HOW DO YOU GET TO DESIGN MODELS? WHAT STUDIES DO YOU RECOMMEND?
To draw a model, it is necessary to have some basics of tailoring modeling. It is a very complex matter, but not impossible. In Italy, there are many schools that organize courses of this kind.
DO YOU HAVE MODELS FOR CHILDREN?
My model line is mainly dedicated to women, but I admit that I would like to create some models for children in the future.
DO YOU RECOMMEND THE PARIS MARKETS WHERE TO FIND BEAUTIFUL FABRICS?
One of my favorite haberdasheries is "Entrée de Fournisseur", "La mercerie Parisienne" in the Marais district. Here you can find truly unique fabrics, patterns and buttons. It is a must on any trip to Paris.
HOW TO CHOOSE A BASIC SEWING COURSE?
A good basic sewing course must give the student the opportunity to learn the basics of cutting and sewing. I would deal with tailoring/modeling later.
DO YOU RECOMMEND YOUR EASY-TO-DO PATTERN?
One of the simplest paper patterns and that was born with the intention of creating something suitable for beginners is the Lucilla skirt. A very simple project in appearance but in reality, very complete.
DO YOU FOLLOW SOME FRENCH OR ENGLISH SEWING PORTAL FROM WHICH TO GET INSPIRATION? IF SO, WHICH ONE?
I follow many and are always looking for new creative ideas. My absolute favorite is the French portal of Artesane.
WHICH FABRICS DO YOU PREFER TO USE FOR SUMMER DRESSES AND WHICH FOR WINTER DRESSES?
In summer, I love light and fluid fabrics, viscose is one of those and, based on the more or less heavy processing, it is an excellent fabric to be used in the winter season as well as the inevitable wool.
WHAT FABRIC AND WHICH CUT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO WRAP A CEREMONY DRESS SUCH AS A BAPTISM OR WEDDING?
For a baptism or a wedding, I would choose beautiful silk or fancy viscose, the cut depends a lot on the taste and style of the person who has to wear it. For me, it would certainly have a cut at the waist and a wide and fluttering skirt.
DO YOU ALSO DO SEWING ONLINE COURSES?
I currently do not organize sewing courses online, but I would love to be able to do it. At the moment I enjoy creating short video tutorials to practice for a possibility in the future.
WHERE CAN YOUR MODELS BE SEEN AND PURCHASED?
All our paper models are available on our online boutique ateliervicolon6.it in two paper or digital PDF formats. Furthermore, I am starting to distribute them to some haberdashery in Italy and abroad.
